LGMD Awareness Day 2026: Advocate. Educate. Celebrate.
On 30 September 2026, the global community will come together to mark Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy (LGMD) Awareness Day – an opportunity to raise awareness, share knowledge and celebrate the people and communities affected by LGMD.
This year’s theme, “Advocate. Educate.Celebrate,” highlights three important ways we can help strengthen understanding and support for people living with LGMD.
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophies are a group of rare genetic neuromuscular diseases characterised primarily by progressive muscle weakness affecting the muscles around the hips and shoulders. There are more than 30 genetically distinct forms of LGMD, which can vary considerably in their age of onset, progression and impact on individuals and families.
Advocate. Educate. Celebrate.
Advocate for greater awareness, improved access to appropriate care and continued investment in research and the development of treatments for LGMD.
Educate by sharing reliable information and increasing understanding among people living with LGMD, families, healthcare professionals, researchers and the wider community.
Celebrate the strength, experiences, achievements and contributions of the global LGMD community, while recognising the work being done to advance research, care and support.
These principles closely reflect TREAT-NMD’s own commitment to Inform, Connect and Advance. By informing communities with trusted knowledge, connecting people and organisations across the neuromuscular field, and advancing research, care and treatment, we can help create a stronger environment for progress in LGMD.
At TREAT-NMD, we are proud to support the global LGMD community and the researchers, clinicians, patient organisations and industry partners working to improve outcomes for people living with these conditions.
This LGMD Awareness Day, we encourage our community to Advocate, Educate and Celebrate – and to help Inform, Connect and Advance progress in LGMD.
